Tulsa-Utsunomiya Student Exchange Program
Is Seeking Host Families and Travelers
Have you ever wanted to learn more about Japan? How about
"adopting" a Japanese student for a few days this
spring? Two groups will arrive in Tulsa in March for a week.
Or you might consider traveling to Japan in June.
When you open your home to one of these students, your family
will have a meaningful experience you will never forget! Since
1995, our Sister City of Utsunomiya, Japan, has sent students
to Tulsa for homestays and school visits. More than a dozen
schools have welcomed our sister city friends over the years.
The friendships formed have been numerous and the memories
incredible!
Interested families will attend an orientation and will be
invited to participate in a potluck dinner. While in Tulsa,
the Japanese students will attend local schools with their
host family kids for three days and spend two days of community
service and sight-seeing. Students also will have an unscheduled
weekend, in which families can enjoy time with thier visitors.
Host
Family application & principal forms are due by Feburary
28. If you are interested in hosting a student, please
contact Tulsa Global Alliance at 591-4750. For more information,
contact Rebecca Fowler, 591-5251, rfowler@dsda.com or Gayle
Long, 481-3624, glong2825@aol.com.

orientation is an obligatory meeting when host families will
learn the name, address and other details of the student they'll
host and receive tips about hosting a foreign visitor.
A reciprocal trip to Utsunomiya
is made when Tulsa-area students who are 7th, 8th or 9th grade
graduates go to Utsunomiya in June soon after the school year
ends. At least three (3) orientation sessions are required
to cover travel arrangements, simple language practice and

to book your airline ticket. If you don't have a passport,
we strongly suggest getting it immediately..

PROGRAM PURPOSE: To annually give Tulsa and Utsunomiya
students educational and cultural experiences promoting better
world understanding and friendship between our two cities.
The students have the opportunity to visit the other city,
live with a host family for a week and attend school.
ELIGIBILITY:
Any Tulsa or Utsunomiya student in 7th, 8th or 9th grade who
is mature enough to benefit from the experience and who will
be a creditable representative of Tulsa and Utsunomiya may
apply. Nearly 20 area middle and high schools have participated
over the years.
Please join us in presenting this amazing program that opens
our youth's horizons, giving them a new window on our world.
This is a wonderful volunteer host family opportunity for
the entire family and an opportunity to welcome a Japanese
student into our home and classrooms. This program started
in 1995 when Utsunomiya sent its first middle school group
to Tulsa. Tulsa responded in kind for the first time in June
2001.
