Located 225 miles northwest of Mexico City, San Luis Potosi is famous for its beautiful old churches, colonial architecture, and Mexican traditions. Its population is just over 2.6 million, and approximately 60% of its residents are under the age of 30. The State was given the name "San Luis Rey," King Saint Louis, in honor of Louis IX of France, and "Potosi" because the wealth of the state compared to the rich silver mines in Potosi, Bolivia. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Franciscans, Augustinians, and Jesuits arrived to the area and settled, and then began to build churches and buildings, many of which are still standing and have been turned into museums and universities.

A GIFT FROM SAN LUIS POTOSI TO TULSA
Tulsa received a Caja de Aqua or water box gift from San Luis Potosi, Tulsa's first Sister City. A big shout out to Melton Trucking Lines for providing moving services. The Caja de Agua was delivered to the Tulsa Botanic Garden where the contents of eleven crates weighing four tons will be assembled. When assembled, the water box will measure 8-1/2 feet tall.

The University of Tulsa (TU) has finalized negotiations with the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi to launch a new JumpStart exchange program for TU students in San Luis Potosi. Members of TU leadership (Vivian Wang, Bruce Willis, and Jennifer Airey) visited San Luis Potosi on January 10 to attend the university’s 100th anniversary celebration of its autonomous status, where they formally signed the partnership agreements. Clark Frayser led a delegation of Tulsans to attend the Festival de Ciudades Hermanas in San Luis Potosi from November 2-6. The Festival marked the city’s 430th anniversary and involved a wide multicultural exhibition with an emphasis on music, dance, gastronomy, crafts, sports, tourism and exhibitions related to each of San Luis Potosi’s Sister Cities. The delegation included representatives from the University of Tulsa, Casa de la Cultura and the Hispanic-American Foundation of Tulsa and focused on exploring new opportunities for educational and cultural exchange between Tulsa and San Luis Potosi.

Former Tulsa Mayor Susan Savage and former San Luis Potosi Mayor Mario Leal Campos at Philbrook Museum. Both served as mayors of their respective cities in the 1990s, and Mayor Savage visited San Luis Potosi where she and a group of Tulsans were hosted by Mayor Campos. Having bonded during that trip, the mayors reunited at Philbrook during the opening of the “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism” exhibit.

On January 20, 2022 Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum met with San Luis Potosi Mayor Enrique Ceballos Galindo via Zoom for a meet and greet and to strengthen the bond between the Sister Cities. It was a promising meeting to discuss expanding opportunities between both cities beyond just cultural, sports and tourism but to include economic and academic experiences. San Luis Potosi invited Mayor Bynum and TGA to attend the city’s 430th anniversary celebration in November.

Adolfo Miguel Benavente, San Luis Potosi Fire Chief, and San Luis Potosi Firefighter Israel Hernandez visited Tulsa for a rededication ceremony for a Sister City Fountain at the Tulsa Fire Museum. Thanks to Mayor G.T. Bynum and Rodolfo Quilantan Arenas, Consul General of Mexico in Little Rock, for making remarks at the dedication, and to the Tulsa Fire Department for its hospitality.

TGA and Marshall Brewing Co. have collaborated on a new Sister Cities Beer! Introducing Sister City Cerveza- SLP Mexican-style Lager! In celebration of Mexican Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Tulsa’s first Sister City – San Luis Potosi, Mexico, the first-ever Sister Cities beer was released on September 15th, 2022 at The Taproom at Marshall Brewing, 1742 E 6th St. with a toast at 6:30pm.
